ASA MORRIS

Role at Bellingham Music:
Drum Instructor
Orchestral Percussion Instructor

As an impassioned musician, Asa seeks the underlying grooves. Raised by musicians,
his parents encouraged his musical proclivities and gifted him a drum set. Since his first concert
band experiences in junior high, he felt music performance belonged in his future. In high
school, he participated in the All-State and All-Northwest wind ensembles. During summer
2015, he studied guitar, dance, and Mandarin at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.
Asa began attending Western Washington University in autumn 2016. During summer
2017, he served as a counselor at the Marrowstone Music Festival, and enjoyed performing
pieces like the Rite of Spring and Romeo and Juliet Overture. In 2019, he won the WWU
concerto competition, playing Robert Jager’s Concerto for Percussion and Band alongside
David Mills, and earned a performance accompanied by the WWU orchestra.
.
Over the years, Asa has acquired a knowhow in concert and mallet percussion, which
has enriched his inflection on drum set, his original instrument. He enjoys listening to hard bop,
progressive rock, and obscure chamber music pieces. Outside of music, he likes to gallivant in
the forests and play games of Halo.
